Colorless or yellow deliquescent crystals or liquids. Soluble in ethanol, ether, water. It has active chemical properties and can react with ammonia, amide, aldehyde and compounds containing carboxyl groups by addition or condensation. Mainly used in textile industry. It is prepared by catalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol and air in gas phase.
Chemical property
The steam is green and burns in purple flame. Rapid polymerization occurs when it is placed, reacted violently with water or dissolved in aqueous solvents. Usually in various forms of aggregation. When heated, anhydrous polymers are converted into monomers. The monomer solution can be obtained by co-heating the polymer with p-propylene anisole, phenylether, camphor, methyl nonylketone or benzaldehyde. Aqueous solution contains monomolecular glyoxal, which is weak acidic and has active chemical properties. It can react with ammonia, amide, aldehyde and carboxyl compounds by addition or condensation.
Function and use
Glyoxal is mainly used in textile industry. It can increase the shrinkage and wrinkle resistance of cotton, nylon and other fibers as fiber treatment agent. It is a durable press finishing agent. This use accounts for 80% of the total glyoxal consumption in Japan. Glyoxal is an insoluble adhesive such as gelatin, animal glue, cheese, polyvinyl alcohol and starch. Glyoxal is also used in leather industry and in making waterproof matches. Glyoxal is a raw material for organic synthesis. 2-D resin was prepared by heating condensation of acetaldehyde with urea and formaldehyde in the presence of sodium carbonate and used as fabric finishing agent; imidazole was synthesized by cyclization of glyoxal with formaldehyde and ammonium sulfate, then clotrimazole and miconazole were synthesized; benzopyrazine was synthesized by cyclization of glyoxal with o-phenylenediamine: it was the intermediate of pyrazinamide, an anti-tuberculosis drug. Hydroxyphenylacetic acid produced by glyoxal has been industrially produced in Japan and is used as an intermediate of antibiotics and vitamin A series products. Glyoxal is also used in the synthesis of berberine hydrochloride and sulfamethoxazine. It is also used as insecticide, deodorant, corpse preservative and sand curing agent.
